July 27, 2017

Dear Convivium Members:Hope everyone is enjoying all the fruits of summer!

Here’s a reminder and an update:

You may have noticed a SOLD OUT notice on our website for the October 2016 harvest oil, if you’ve tried to order in the last week or so. Yes, we were sold out of the bottled inventory of cases, but we’ve replenished from our reserve and are accepting orders again (and because we had to reorder labels, we’ll have another batch bottled, we hope, in the next week or so).

We were featured in a lovely article in Bloomberg Pursuits (titled “This $25 Olive Oil Is the Only Bottle You’ll Ever Need”) and we’ve gained new customers because of it, hence we sold out of what we had on-hand.

Some of you might have heard about the drought in Central Italy (Tuscany, Lazio, Umbria, Le Marche—as well as other regions of Italy) that has affected the olives for 2017. Drought and extreme heat like we’ve never experienced before in all our years in Italy. The other significant problem happened earlier. In late May and early June, just at the time when the olives were about to form, a hard heat wave hit and many tiny new olives dried up and soon fell off. Some producers will have a total loss for the year. Others have managed to salvage 20% of their crop, mainly because some varieties flowered earlier or later and avoided the late-spring heat stroke.

Because of this, we’ve decided to wait until early or mid-October to take orders for the 2017 harvest, since we need to assess the quantity and quality of the oil. If we know more in the next few weeks, we’ll let everyone know. Meanwhile hoping for rain.

Tanti saluti,

Edward Mayes
